Factorial Analysis in the Novel Death in Oran “Almawt fi Wahran” by Habib Sayah – An Applied Approach

Abstract

The novel Death in Oran by Habib Sayah depicts the suffering of El-Hawari in the
midst of the city of Oran—the suffering of a social hero within a chaotic society that is
not governed by any human or decent life principles. He stands as a living example of
a person living in an environment that opposes any desire for progress and for breaking
free from the habits attached to place and time, to a suspicious present and past. This
liberation can only be achieved by shedding the harmful residual sediments and holding
on to the positive ones, in the hope that this may contribute to the elevation of the
individual and, consequently, to the elevation of the city and its inhabitants, who have
become a symbol of pessimism and despair for the narrator. This has driven him to
confine himself to his house, which serves as a place of safety and calm amid the noise
of life and its problems.
