Abstract

Women's participation in electoral politics is a crucial indicator of democratic inclusiveness,
political equality, and effective governance. This study examines the status, trends, and
determinants of women's participation in electoral politics in Andhra Pradesh, with particular
emphasis on voter participation, political representation, and the factors influencing women's
electoral engagement. The study adopts a descriptive research design and is based entirely on
secondary data collected from credible sources, including the Election Commission of India,
Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission, Census of India, National Commission for Women,
government reports, peer-reviewed journals, and publications from international organisations.
The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques, trend analysis, and
comparative methods. The findings reveal that women's voter turnout has increased significantly
in recent years, demonstrating greater political awareness and democratic participation.
However, women's representation as candidates and elected representatives remains
comparatively low due to socio-cultural barriers, financial constraints, limited political
opportunities, and unequal party nominations. The study highlights the positive role of
education, economic empowerment, self-help groups, and constitutional provisions in promoting
women's political participation. It concludes that strengthening political party commitment,
expanding leadership development programmes, implementing gender-sensitive electoral
reforms, and ensuring equal opportunities are essential for improving women's representation
and fostering inclusive democratic governance in Andhra Pradesh.
