FROM CLASSROOM TO CRISIS: THE P2P2S FRAMEWORK, NARRATIVE EMPATHY, AND DEMOCRATIC CONSCIOUSNESS IN WALT WHITMAN’S ‘LEAVES OF GRASS’

Abstract

This study explores the intersection of the P2P2S Framework, narrative empathy, and
democratic consciousness in Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. As a seminal work of
American literature, Leaves of Grass embodies themes of equality, inclusiveness, freedom,
and collective identity, making it a valuable resource for examining the role of literature in
fostering civic awareness and democratic values. The study adopts a descriptive and
qualitative research methodology based on secondary sources, including scholarly articles,
books, and literary critiques. Through textual and thematic analysis, the research investigates
how Whitman’s poetry cultivates narrative empathy by encouraging readers to engage with
diverse human experiences and perspectives. The P2P2S Framework Preparation,
Participation, Perspective-Taking, Problem-Solving, and Social Responsibility is employed
as an analytical lens to assess the educational and civic relevance of the text. The findings
reveal that Leaves of Grass promotes democratic consciousness by inspiring critical
reflection, social inclusion, ethical awareness, and active citizenship. The study further
highlights the significance of narrative empathy in bridging personal experiences with
broader societal concerns. By connecting literary learning with democratic engagement, the
research demonstrates the transformative potential of literature in preparing individuals to
respond thoughtfully and responsibly to contemporary social and civic challenges.
