Abstract
The rapid development and deployment of vaccines and antiviral drugs have played a crucial role in controlling and mitigating the impact of pandemics, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic. Pharmacology, the branch of medicine that deals with the study of drugs and their effects on the human body, has been essential in developing therapeutic interventions that are both effective and safe for mass distribution. Vaccines, which stimulate the body’s immune system to prevent infection, and antiviral drugs, which inhibit the replication of viruses, are critical in managing infectious diseases. This article explores the contributions of pharmacology in the development of vaccines and antiviral drugs, particularly during pandemic situations. It reviews the mechanisms of action, therapeutic benefits, challenges, and the global efforts made to ensure equitable access to these vital interventions.
